Five Power Foods That Make You Great

In this community of adventurers we all want to trek farther, climb higher, and go longer. We refuse to be held back by anything, least of all ourselves. We obviously have the psychological drive, but sometimes our bodies undermine us and hold us back. Often we feel sluggish because of fatigue, strain or, dare I say, poor diet. Fatigue and strain often come with the territory in these types of sports, but the effects of diet is totally preventable and easily managed.

This list is designed to keep your mind free, and your body under your command, using easily found power foods.

There are hundreds of power foods to choose from, each with it’s own unique benefit, this list however singles out the select few that offer only the most fierce results. Many of which can be easily packed along on the trail, which may make you feel as though you’re cheating; but hey, you’re in the know, use that knowledge.

Here’s your list, and remember, with great power comes great adventure…

5: Apples

As the saying goes, an apple a day keeps the trail your way, (at least that's the one I know anyway). When eaten regularly apples control harmful LDL cholesterol, protect against cancer and heart disease, all while being a great antioxidant to boot. And these mini-meal pods of body magic are super easy to pack on any wilderness journey.

4: Avocados

Avocados are another packable fruit with huge benefits. They are extremely high in fiber, which protects against heart disease. They also pack a punch in the vitamins and minerals department, being loaded with C, K, B6, niacin, potassium, copper, and magnesium they provide all the right stuff to give you the edge while hanging out on the edge.

3: Nuts

All nuts provide essential fats, and despite what the latest trend diet might tell you, certain natural fats are needed to maintain proper body ergonomics. They’re rich and packed with vitamins and minerals, which provide you with great antioxidants. So really you can't go wrong with a nice mix of your favorite nuts as a snack on the trail or really anywhere at anytime.

2: Chilies

Perhaps for the more daring, chilies and peppers offer a dose of vitamins, cholesterol control, and cancer fighting chemicals with a kick. These little mouth bombs even have pain killing qualities using a compound found within them called capsaicin, which is also the heat producing element, cause a release of endorphins that act as your body's natural pain killer. An additional important convenience to making chillies part of your diet is their ability to improve blood circulation, better circulation better progression up the trail, climbing route, and other pursuits.

Blueberries are not only a power food, they’re a brain food too. And anything that benefits both your body and your brain definitely rates a spot in your pack. They offer antioxidant activity higher than any other food known; they fight cancer cells with a vengeance, and possess the ability to fight against cognitive decline. Yet another benefit, particularly in our realm of interest, they offer a punch of joint saving anti-inflammatory effects. All of this in a tiny berry, which when dried can be easily pack and added to other foods or eaten alone wherever you may find yourself.
